A taste of authentic dishes from Spain in the heart of Central

Fancy a trip to Spain but don’t have time?  A visit to BCN (short for Barcelona) will make you feel as though you’ve been whisked away to Spain, well at least for your taste buds!  Located inconspicuously on Peel Street in Central, Hong Kong, BCN is set up much like a Spanish tapas bar with 12 high tools and a spacious open kitchen.  Guests get an intimate experience and can watch all the action behind the scenes of each dish being prepared by head chef Vincent Lee.  Ideal for private dining experiences, the venue can be booked for parties with small group of friends.  BCN has recently launched an a la carte menu during lunch in addition to the set dinner menus that change every two months.  We recently visited to try the vegetarian menu which is available on request.
We start with the buttery Manchego Cheese with Tomato Foam.  The lightly flavoured goat cheese was perfect for dipping into the tomato foam, made from the essence of fresh tomato juices.  We liked the sweetness of the black olives in as they contrasted well with the black tomatoes native to Spain in the simple Spanish Black Tomato Salad.  Sourcing the best black truffles from France when they are in season during the winter, BCN integrates black truffles in a number of its winter dishes.  We could smell the aroma of the truffles coming from the crispy golden layers of the Black Truffle Mushroom Croquette as we took a bite into one of our traditional tapas favorites.  The croquette along with the Deep Fried Manchego Cheese taste great on their own as the flavours are bold or dip them into the Aioli Sauce for an extra punch of garlic.  Be sure to eat these while they are hot!
The creamy blend of Black Truffle and Wild Mushroom Soup was another one of our favorites and there was also a bit of playful molecular gastronomy in this dish with the transparent beads of olive oil caviar garnished on the side of the bowl which can be added for an even creamier soup.  If you fancy cold soups, the refreshing Gazpacho is a must-have, especially during the summer, but we loved it even in the cold weather!  This creamy goodness bursts with the freshness of tomatoes.  While the Roasted Bell Pepper with Black Truffle Toast was quite flavourful, especially with the mashed eggplant, it would fit better on a summer menu.  The colourful Black Truffle Mixed Vegetable Paella was cooked just right without the rice being too dry and packed with finely chopped tomatoes, asparagus and peppers.  The set wraps with a delightful Soft Chocolate Pudding with a lightly flavoured homemade pistachio ice cream along with a strawberry “yolk” that can be eaten on its own if you like the explosion of strawberry juice in your mouth or it could be protruded to let it run down the lightly flavoured warm chocolate sauce in the pudding.
In addition to the sumptuous menu, be sure to try the wine list at BCN as each wine is specially handpicked from Spain.  With authentic flavours, attentive service and intimate ambiance, we can’t wait to be back to try the a la carte menu at BCN!
