Hong Kong’s top hairstylist on why he abandoned chemical-heavy products (and you should too)

In middle of busy, lively Sheung Wan is a chic sanctuary, where you can leave the street-level commotion behind. This is the new location of emmanuel f. organic salon and spa, the pioneer in natural and organic hair, beauty, spa, and makeup services since 2008.

Renowned stylist Emmanuel Faipoux founded his eponymous salon at a time when organic hair care was a barely-known concept. Starting at a young age, Faipoux had pursued a successful career as a professional hairstylist, quickly rising to the top as he worked with top names such as The Jacques Dessange Group Paris, Dior, and L’Oreal.

In his work, he regularly came into contact with chemical-heavy hair products and dyes, which proved to be extremely detrimental to his health. At 30 years old, this constant exposure took a toll, and he was diagnosed and treated for cancer.

This was Emmanuel’s moment of enlightenment. “It’s only when we lose our health that we realise how good it feels to enjoy it”.

With this in mind, and with a clean bill of health, he decided to make a change. Starting at home, he switched to organic products in his daily life, which soon translated into improvement in his wellbeing and resilience.

However, with his personal lifestyle on track, he soon entered back into a toxin-heavy workplace.

“How can I make my salon a healthier place for me, my team, and my customers?” Seeing the benefits that organic living had afforded him personally, Emmanuel wanted to bring those healthy benefits to his clientele and staff; at the same time, he knew it was important to continue providing his clients with outstanding results; there could be no sacrifice to style, if his business was to continue to succeed.

In the hairdressing industry at the time, the majority of product formulas were made of 100 per cent chemicals and artificial ingredients, and in the beauty and spa industries only a few could offer treatments with organic options that achieved the same results. Emmanuel began, by trial and error, to seek out the best hair and beauty products that were being made with natural, organic ingredients.

Ultimately, his worldwide search yielded organic products that actually surpassed his expectations – which also resulted in a positive response from his customers. This was the starting point for the birth of the all-new, eco-friendly, health-positive, organic emmanuel f.

A pioneer at the time, Emmanuel’s greatest challenge was changing the perception of eco-friendly and natural products. People needed to see that the products he chose could deliver the results they wanted, and leave their hair even healthier than before. Going green also meant changes in the methods and techniques needed when working with the products; at first, many stylists were reluctant to learn new skills.

Gradually, as word spread, the results spoke for themselves, and customers began to flock to experience the only salon offering natural and organic colours, highlights, perms, and straightenings. Moms-to-be, in particular, led the charge, delighted to discover that they could still have brilliant colour while pregnant, due to the absence of harsh chemicals usually found in hair dyeing processes.

Other salons started to have demand from their clients for healthy alternatives for their hair. And, eventually, emmanuel f ‘s established reputation meant that it now could attract professional stylists and therapists looking to offer better, less harmful options for their customers and themselves.

Today, emmanuel f exclusively offers styling, beauty, spa, and makeup services using products that are Cosmobio certified (containing at least 95% organic ingredients). And the eco-friendly motif extends beyond the products used; the salon concept naturally means that Emmanuel’s team is environmentally conscious, for instance using reusable organic cotton sheets rather than single-use aluminium foils for hair highlights & colouring.

Emmanuel recently moved his chic salon and spa to the ground floor of The Pemberton in Sheung Wan, where a serene and soothing vibe welcomes guests once they enter through the sliding glass doors. Smiling, knowledgeable staff and thoughtfully-planned spaces are the key, complemented by natural textiles and materials such as marble and stone and wood, which also serve to offer create a toxin-free environment.

“I believe your health is your biggest luxury”, says Emmanuel. And we couldn’t agree more.
