Saving Lives With Recycled Soap

Have you ever wondered what happens to the soap that you use once in your hotel room? Most of the time it’s thrown away and ends up in landfill.

It might not seem like a huge problem, until you realize that more than 2 million bars of soap are discarded from hotel rooms every day just in the U.S, according to Clean The World Organization.

Can you imagine now how many are wasted every day all around the world?

All this wasted soap can easily be put to a better use. And that’s what Shawn Seipler founder of Clean The World has been doing since 2009. His not-for-profit charity organization collect, recycle and sanitize soap from hospitality industry and other sectors that generate environmental waste and distribute them to homeless shelters and developing countries.

Clean the World is the largest global recycler of hotel amenities with more than 4,000 hotel and resort partners, and over 500 event partners. As the world’s first and only high-volume soap recycler, they ensure that all bars of recycled soap are completely safe and will not harm the end user.

By providing bars of soap that would otherwise go to landfill, they are saving lives around the world. “It has been estimated that 9,000 children die every day from Pneumonia and diarrheal diseases, these are the two leading causes of death among children under the age 5”, Seipler adds.

Through the distribution of these and other donated products to impoverished people, they reduce mortality rates for hygiene-related illnesses and prevent millions of deaths each year.

Since 2014, Clean the World Asia has distributed more than 730,000 bars of soap to children and families in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan, Philippines and Nepal. Looking to the future, the organization wants every hotel in Asia to have access to their program. “We are right now working to get ourselves into Mainland China. We want to be able to expand to Korea, Vietnam, India and hopefully Australia”.

The organization wants to expand the hotel recycling scheme and aims to be the global leader for providing CSR solutions. “We truly believe that inside of everybody there is a part of DNA that wants to help others. We want to make it easy for people to help others, to help the environment and to help the children”, affirms Shawn.
