Nickel metal hydride batteries in hybrid electric vehicles are making way for lithium ion technology in emerging plug-in hybrids. Currently, Japan is manufacturing the majority of the advanced batteries, controlling 55% of the global market, but China and South Korea are quickly catching up, with China’s share at 25% and Korea at 18%. Li-on technology is lighter, lasts longer and has high energy density compared to nickel metal hydride technology. 60% of the electric vehicle market is predicted to be replaced by Li-on by 2020.
