CitizenMap environmental story mapping in Hong Kong
Contact

CitizenMap is a genius little concept: a user-driven citizen reporting project that maps environmental issues in Hong Kong. An initiative of the South China Morning Post, this project encourages mapping of stories related to the environment in Hong Kong and Southern China. It offers a collective voice of residents and local citizen reports, with shared stories ranging from illegal dumping and unauthorized development to vegetation removal. Rather than solely relying on reporters, this project enables any one who has witnessed an environmental incident to share the stories with the public, helping to place ownership of issues on everyone’s shoulders. It is also an excellent way to build a community and network to help push for change, so that people reporting incidents can be rewarded with a sense of initiative and responsibility, and gauge public support for something they consider to be an issue.
