Good vibes and yummy, healthy food in Soho

Life Café, the trendy modern vegetarian restaurant located on the Central escalators just above Hollywood Road, offers a relaxing atmosphere with interiors made from reclaimed teak wood, recycled copper-domed lights, world music and soft edges. Sitting next to the open windows, you can observe the vibe of Central’s Soho area while still felling cocooned in the soothing atmosphere created by the restaurant’s décor. In nice weather, the rooftop terrace is a hidden gem of outdoor seating away from the hustle and bustle of the streets below.

We visited in the middle of the afternoon and tried the flourless chocolate cake. Made with almond flour, walnuts and cocoa powder, the gluten-free cake involves a delicious crunchy chocolate crust, slightly sweet centre, and plenty of walnuts. It was firm almost to the point of being a little hard to bite, but tasted like a dream. A nice variety of other wheat-free, dairy-free and yeast-free treats are also available for teatime treat or take-home. At mealtimes, vegetarians and omnivores alike will enjoy the colourful pastas, salads, pizzas and other modern vegetarian and vegan choices, all made with local and organic ingredients.

Drinks are another specialty of Life Café. My chocolate cake was well complemented by a rich, thick Sunshine Shake, blended from mangoes, banana, flax seeds, and dates. A wide selection of organic teas and coffees is rounded out by freshly-made juices and organic wines and beer, which are discounted during happy hour from 4-8pm on weekdays and all day during weekends.
