Organized by the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association and sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank, the 16th annual Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon was held this year on February 5th.

To create a more environmentally-friendly race and to encourage the public to adopt healthier lifestyles, the “Take a Brake” Low Carbon Action campaign was launched in 2011 and continued successfully in 2012 to encourage race participants to drive less by taking more public transportation, running, walking and cycling on the event day as well as for the public to adopt the practice not just on the event day, but as a daily habit in their lifestyles.

A number of initiatives were taken during the race to promote a greener marathon. These included promoting online enrollment to reduce paper usage, reducing the amount of plastic bags and using biodegradable materials for runner bags, installing recycling bins at the start and finish lines, and using energy-efficient cars to lead runners during the event.

A new aspect to the marathon was a 3km wheelchair race and full marathon wheelchair race, both added to support diversity through inclusion.

This year’s marathon supported three lead charities: The Hong Kong Paralympic Committee & Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, Seeing is Believing-Orbis and The Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society. Since the inception of the Marathon Charity Programme, over HK $25 million has been raised for the three causes.

If you were one of the 70,000 Hong Kong citizens and visitors who joined this year, congratulations and hope you had fun. If you missed out, be sure to mark your calendars and start training for this meaningful event next year!
