Cleaning products that make our house sparkle and are kind to our bodies and planet

Most homes are filled with an endless supply of toxic chemical products designed to clean and disinfect our homes. We use these products daily believing that we’re creating a safer, more sanitary living environment; unfortunately they may be having a profound impact on our heath as well as the planet’s.
Some common chemicals found in household cleaning products have been linked to headaches, skin allergies, and more serious long-term illnesses such as cancer and asthma. These chemicals aren’t just contained inside our homes, either. Many of these toxic products get flushed into the drains (e.g. toilet, sink and shower cleaners), and thus find themselves in our drinking water, albeit in trace amounts.
Of course to avoid bringing the worst offending ingredients into our homes, we could lurk in the shopping lanes examining and researching the overwhelming ingredients listed on every cleaning product. Alternatively, we could just take the easier and much safer route by choosing a natural product. Of those two options, we know which choice we prefer…
On hand to help us clean our homes naturally is the Shanghai-based company, Soapnut Republic, who were recently declared winner of The Natural and Organic Products Asia Awards 2015. Started by New Zealander Bobby Mitchell and Australian Kim Gilliland, Soapnut Republic have developed a range of natural products, which blend the extract of the natural soapnut berry (Sapindus mukorossi) with essential oils, plants and mineral ingredients from around the world.
Soapnut berry has been used by Chinese and Native American societies for cleaning for centuries, due to its powerful cleaning properties. It’s even a popular ingredient in medicine as a treatment of migraines, eczema and psoriasis. It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, hypoallergenic and extremely gentle on skin, clothing and household surfaces.
The products on offer by Soapnut Republic are vast, ranging from laundry liquid to hand soap to floor and glass cleaner. They even have a safe and effective fruit and vegetable wash, which removes approximately three times more toxic chemical residue than using water alone! We put the following products to the test to see how they compared with our regular toxic varieties.
Laundry Liquid with Lemongrass
This biodegradable and allergen free laundry liquid left our clothes smelling fresh and citrusy, and even managed to remove most of the oily stains fixed onto my husband’s chef overalls! Our clothes also felt softer than normal, which is probably the result of the addition of eucalyptus and tea tree oils.
Glass Cleaner with Citrus
Cleaning glass and mirrors can be one of the most frustrating tasks out there, and if you’re anything like me can often lead to a higher blood pressure and a streakier end result. Thankfully, cleaning with this glass cleaner was quick and painless. A definite ‘must have’ for pernickety clean freaks!
Foaming Hand Soap
This foaming hand soap left our hands smelling fantastic and actually made our hands feel softer. The ingredient includes a healthy dose of tea tree from Australia as well as lavender, which is a natural antiseptic and antifungal. For those who prefer something a bit softer, there is a lemongrass fragrance, or for a puncher, cooling effect, try the peppermint.
A common perception is that natural cleaning products just can’t measure up to toxic chemical loaded ones, and we have to say we were slightly dubious before we started using these products. We don’t often like being proven wrong - but in this case it was a positive thing. We will definitely be making the move over to clean and green products from now on!
