Five natural alternatives to plastic straws

Every year, millions of single-use plastic straws get washed up on the shores of our beautiful green earth – polluting the environment, eaten by wildlife, and consequently finding their way into our food chain. Many of us may have realized this at some point or another, yet we continue to sip away through plastic drinking straws – at bars, take-out joints, cinemas, theme parks and cafes – blissfully unmindful of the fate awaiting those long, hollow bits of plastic once the bills have been paid and the tables are cleared.
Luckily, there are some great eco-friendly alternatives to the ubiquitous plastic drinking aid, so you can continue sipping responsibly. Here are our top 5 picks:

Straw Straws
Number 1 on our list: straws made of…well, straw! These babies are naturally grown, hand-harvested, and handcrafted from actual stalks of grain. 100% biodegradable and renewable, these straws can be thrown on top of the compost heap after each use – with no harsh consequences for the environment.

We recently discovered Bio-Strohhalme GMBH - the award-winning, bio-straw manufacturer that spearheaded the straw straws concept. Recently, they have followed up their success with the manufacture of other bio-straws, including ones made of paper. Although the website is in German, you can get your hands on some of its neat straw straws by emailing the company’s Hong Kong distributor Petra Schweiger, at petra@lilyfld.com.

Bamboo Straws
For those of us living in Asia, a shortage of bamboo is not something we’ve ever had to worry about. And especially here in Hong Kong, we’ve become pretty resourceful with the use of bamboo over the years, from dim sum steamers to the scaffolding that adorns our skyscrapers. So it was only a matter of time before someone invented bamboo straws!

Made without inks or dyes, bamboo straws are naturally hygienic, easy to clean, and reusable. Kopnoi in Laos sells a pack of 12 handmade, bamboo straws for HK $147 with free worldwide shipping!

Paper Straws
Although paper straws only have a one time-use, they present a much more eco-friendly alternative to plastic straws, as they are not only completely biodegradable but are also conveniently compostable. And did we mention adorable? Browse through The Party Boutique, where a treasure trove of party supplies awaits - including an incredible selection of colourful paper straws for all occasions!

Glass Straws
Why should kids have all the fun? Add a touch of sophistication to your next cocktail event or dinner party with elegant glass straws that are as fuss-free to maintain as they are beautiful to look at. Free from nasty chemicals and dyes that are present in plastic straws, glass straws are food safe and can simply be popped into the dishwasher for use over and over again!

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel straws provide a classic and sleek finishing touch to any drink. Like their glass cousins, stainless steel straws are BPA-free, food-safe and dishwasher-safe, providing a responsible (and convenient to clean) alternative to their plastic counterparts. EcoJarz offers a great online selection of glass and stainless steel straw options with worldwide shipping.
