Spa in the sky
Delve into a heavenly massage in Hong Kong’s highest pampering spot

Ever wondered what having a spa experience in the sky would feel like?  While massages are now available on top-end luxury flights, there’s no need to actually fasten your seatbelt or, for that matter, remortgage your home to pay for it. You can experience this luxury without (really) ever leaving the ground, at the Ritz- Carlton Spa in Hong Kong by ESPA.  Currently the highest hotel in the world at 1607.6 ft., the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong occupies the 102nd to 118th floors of the International Commerce Centre… and ESPA sits on the 116th floor, at a spacious 9,257 sq. ft.  We recently decided to indulge in an ultimate pampering experience, including breathtaking views of Hong Kong, with ESPA’s signature Lava Shell Treatment.

We were wowed by the grandiose décor of the Ritz-Carlton and the exceptional service of its staff well before we even reached the 116th floor spa.  We were warmly greeted at the arrival lobby on the 9th floor as well as on the 103rd floor, where the Ritz-Carlton’s reception and six dining venues are located.  The welcoming room at the spa is beautifully designed with dimmed lighting along with a natural seashell installation.  The attentive staff served us warm fruit tea and ushered us into the spacious change room, which features saunas and cool experience showers.

Complementing the idea of a spa in the skies, the décor and atmosphere at the spa is modern and futuristic yet infused with natural elements.  We especially like the winding and narrow hallways of the spa with floor lights reminiscent of twinkling stars.  We took in the gorgeous views of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour as we sat back on a generous reclining chair in our comfy robe in the relaxation room.  Our massage therapist Amy led us into one of nine deluxe treatment rooms to begin a head-to-toe indulgence journey.

Our feet were soaked and scrubbed in a footbath before Amy started my massage using natural relaxation oils.  We opted for the orange and geranium relaxation oil, good for circulation.  If you haven’t tried a lava shell massage before, we highly recommend it.  Seashells are used that have been sand polished to silky smoothness and then heated. Together with long strokes of the therapist’s hands, it creates a soothing combination for detoxification and ease of muscle tension.  we were transported in space and time as Amy poured massage oil onto our skin and began massaging our legs and back before moving to our shoulders and neck.  Amy warmed her hands gradually to avoid any sudden change in temperature on our skin skin, before massaging our body with the heated shells.   Futuristic acoustic music playing in the background helped ease us deeper into a dreamy reverie.  The experience ended with a heavenly scalp massage which was necessarily revitalizing after the deep relaxation.

After the massage, we returned to the relaxation room to enjoy Hong Kong’s gorgeous skyline once again while reflecting on the deep trance of a heavenly massage amidst the stars in the night sky…
