What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a ~3000 year old medical system used to diagnose and treat illness. It has a holistic perspective on the individual's state of health, and includes internal medicine as well as psychology. TCM diagnosis is very complex, and uses a system of patterns identified by symptoms manifesting across the entire body and emotional-thinking ego. It is a big-picture paradigm, which isolates key habits in lifestyle and diet as precursors to disease, and focuses on longevity with the expectation of centenarianism. TCM is a lifestyle medicine; it uses tools such as massage, gua sha, cupping, acupuncture, food therapy, exercise, and herbal medicines to maintain the body's natural equilibrium and resistance to disease.

What does Traditional Chinese Medicine treat?

Traditional Chinese Medicine treats nutritional deficits, chronic illness, pain, emotional imbalances, musculoskeletal problems, developmental and neurological disorders, insomnia, stress, gastrointestinal disorders, fertility, the effects of aging, gynecological dysfunctions, pediatrics, and can reduce the unpleasant symptoms of seasonal colds/flus and often lessen their duration.
It works well in combination with conventional modern medicine, and can reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, delay or prevent surgery in some cases, or increase the speed of recovery post-surgery.

How did you get interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

I became interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine after studying Buddhist and Taoist philosophy and martial arts, which contain valuable techniques for training the mind and body in order to experience greater health and happiness. There is a great deal for us to learn from the past wisdom collected in these traditions. I have been practicing meditation and self-growth techniques from these traditions for 19 years, studied in my Chinese Medicine program for 6 years, and continue to practice forest bathing and qigong.

I use Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture and herbs myself for my own wellness goals. At 44 years old, I am often mistaken for being 10 or more years younger, and I can personally attest to its contribution to my happiness level in life, my strength when I encounter illness, and my youthfulness. I see myself as having a unique position as a white woman who studies and practices Traditional Chinese Medicine. I am able to treat foreigners who would otherwise be too intimidated to try it, due to the language barrier or traditional needling style. I am a translator between cultures: I modify the treatment style to be gentler for westerners, and explain concepts, which are not intuitive to foreigners. Do I know everything there is to understand about Traditional Chinese Medicine? Of course the answer is no. This medicine and system is so vast, you could study it for a lifetime and only glimpse a portion of its knowledge. However, the modern world with its challenges needs this knowledge more than ever, and I have dedicated my career to being a part of that cross-cultural dialogue.
