A scheme for managing waste in Asia-Pacific cities has been created that enables waste reduction through the sale of carbon credits. Unveiled by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Waste Concern, a Bangladesh-based NGO, this initiative can maximize the potential of the informal waste collection sector, while helping millions that make a living from waste recycling to generate income through carbon credits. Waste Concern was one of the first organizations to get carbon credits for composting in developing countries such as Sri Lanka and Vietnam through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
