Detoxing in the City

Don’t you want to feel as happy and look as radiant as this stepping into Spring?  ”Sure”, I hear you shout, ”I’ll go on a 7-day juice detox and will be well on my way”. Think again.

As a health coach who has studied diet and nutrition in great depth, and someone who has also tried many different “detoxes” in her time, I can testify that a week of green juices alone is not, I repeat not, going to cure you of all the toxic nasties that have built-up inside you. You haven’t really detoxed until you get to grips with some basic detox steps.

Hold your horses, before I give away my “detox” secrets, I think you should know one thing: I don’t really believe in detoxes. GASP! At least, not the detoxes which fix you up in 7 days. It’s the word “detox” that puts me off; like it’s one single thing you can do in super-quick time and you’ll be magically “clean”. Nah Ah, it doesn’t work like that. What you will learn here is that you can actually work on detoxing your body 365 days of the year. In fact, you should try to do so as it’s much more effective for losing weight and feeling great.

Spring is a perfect time to work on your wellbeing and health – so here are some facts and tips about really “detoxing” (for want of a better word) to get you started.

• Know where toxins are getting in - Toxins don’t just get into our bodies from drinking too much vino at the weekend. Actually, they’re entering our body like a constant leaky tap all of the time, from the toxins in the air we breathe (and I live in Hong Kong, so I would know), to the chemicals hidden in our everyday products (that’s another huge topic – check out our website for details). So the point here is, know where your toxins are coming from and then minimize them before you get into your “detox- mode”. Otherwise, detoxing is pointless because the toxins are coming in quicker than they’re going out! Aiiiyaaaah!

• You need a healthy liver to detox - Your liver is where the magic happens –  this resourceful organ converts and cleans out the toxins into a form which the body can easily excrete (through sweat etc). Without a healthy liver, you’re going no-where on the detox ride. So learn how to look after your liver as a priority.
• Antioxidants are key  - They support a healthy liver and body. From greens, fruit and superfoods (including chocolate, but not the dairy kind), to all the natural goodness that mother nature gave us in our whole-foods, they all contain magical antioxidants which support the liver and kill the disease causing free-radicals during the detoxing process. So this is why you can detox all year round – if you fuel your diet with antioxidant-rich foods, you’re actually “detoxing” all the time. Amazing!
• Skinnier doesn’t mean healthier - Just because you lose weight, you haven’t lost your toxins just yet – you gotta get them out – be gone! Toxins are mainly fat-soluble, so when you lose some fat during your juice-fast, great, but the toxins that were clinging onto that fat are now just floating around and maybe causing even more damage than before as they attack your tissue and muscles. Yikes! Ever done a juice detox and felt slightly worse than you did before (not saying juices are bad but you can’t rely on them alone)?  This is why – those nasty toxins are just having fun whizzing around your system, making you feel like rubbish. So get them out with things like saunas, infrared saunas, exercise, yoga, body brushing, bentonite clay-drinks (not for everyone, I know, but pretty awesome at pulling out those toxins) etc. 

  A healthy gut equals a healthy life – Almost 70% of your immunity is on your gut, not to mention that’s where you soak up all of the nutrients from your food. As part of your “detox” or cleansing process, you must address your gut health. Hydrotherapy, pro-biotics, fibre, as well as fermented foods all assist in supporting good gut health.
• Clean well-being is more than just eating broccoli and sipping green juice – You can’t expect that you’ll fee on top of the world after a fast, a sauna and a yoga class. Yes, it all helps, but to REALLY detox, you gotta dig-deep and get to the root of anything else holding you back from your best ever health. Are you dealing with stress? Is your sleep good? Are you happy in your relationships? Do you have enough “me” time? If you answer “no” to even one of these questions, it’s time to spring-clean not only your diet but also your soul.
