Eat well

Plenty of options to keep a tummy happy
January 9, 2014

We are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options in Hong Kong - every cuisine, every continent is well represented and the prices range from pocket change to small fortunes. However, despite the vast array of dining outlets, a mere ten years ago it was challenging to find healthy, vegetarian, food that wasn't heavy on refined carbs, oil and imitation meat made from gluten. And forget about seeking out anything organic, locally-grown or vegan!
Thankfully, things have changed. Now we are seeing a wealth of delicious veggie and organic options, from the longstanding and well-loved grandaddy Life Cafe to newer establishments like the delightful Grassroots Pantry, Mana! Fast Slow Food, and Shelter. Even conventional restaurants are extending a gracious welcome to those looking for lighter, greener fare, with the rapid growth and success of the Green Monday menu programme and the upswing of chefs choosing to source sustainable seafoods and small-farm meats.
One of my New Year's resolutions is to cook at home more. Living somewhere that always has fresh local produce available and a wet market nearby full of fun things to try, it just makes sense. I can even have organic veggies and seasonings delivered to me by fab companies like Homegrown Foods and EatFresh - it's just too easy, there's really no excuse! But with so many fab places to try out, and more opening every week, it's going to be a fun year for food in any case - whether at home or on the town.
Come dine with me.
