The future

Byebye disposable plastic bags
January 24, 2014

I would like to share one of my favourite environmental quotes as we enter the weekend:

"Your grandchildren will likely find it incredible - or even sinful - that you burned up a gallon of gasoline to fetch a pack of cigarettes!"
~Paul MacCready, Jr.

This quote, while not about waste directly, reminds me of a dream I had several years ago. In it, my own grandchildren grill me about the 'olden days' when we used to put everything in gross, disposable plastic bags made from fossil fuels - each book or newspaper, each dirrerent type of fruit, each individual purchase from a different store, all bagged up in plastic. In my dream, which has faded only slightly in my memory, the children are incredulous at the ludicrous practice of using a plastic bag for such a short time. When they ask what we did with the bags, I flush with shame, telling them that we buried them in giant holes in the ground, and burned them, and let them seep into the ocean and wild places on our planet. I ask for their forgiveness - we didn't know any better, I say.

I choose to see this dream as a premonition. Now, we do know better. We can change. Just last week, we cheered on as Hawaii became one of the many hundreds of cities and jurisdictions around the globe choosing to enact plastic bag bans.

Our kids will get it, and things will be different within our lifetimes. Start today and get ahead of the curve.
