JUPYEAH pop up swap

Spring 2013
Share the old, like the new

JupYeah (meaning ‘taking stuff’ in Cantonese) is Hong Kong’s first local swap initiative that promotes the spirit of sharing and a greater knowledge of the cycle of transferring resources. In Hong Kong, the economy is driven by a consumption-reliant capitalistic system – what this means is that people often have a lot of stuff they don’t necessarily need. These things then end up in the trash when they are no longer deemed useful, even though they may still be in near-new condition.

With the New Year, it’s the perfect time to go through closets and cupboards to dig out things that we no longer use, but could be useful to another fellow citizen. By sharing redundant possessions with others, we can lengthen the lifespan of useful stuff and facilitate a better redistribution of resources. Moreover, JupYeah helps to build a conscious and responsible lifestyle for our city.

The next JupYeah pop-up swap will be held on 24 February 2013 (Sunday) at The Space in Sheung Wan – the first time a JupYeah swap will be held on Hong Kong Island. To mark this momentous occasion, the organizers have also invited the participation of other enthusiastic organizations, making the event more than just a swap.

Food waste is one particular challenge that Hong Kongers face, and in light of this, non-profit organization Leftovers have been invited to share excess food from Chinese New Year parties to share with fellow Juppers. Independent brand, Memories Factory by Agnes Nong, will exhibit stylish upcycled showpieces that suggest the creative possibilities of waste reduction. Inspiring figures have also been invited to share experiences with the audience, and three DJs will be present at the swap party to ensure everyone has a good time.

To reduce waste generated from the event, participants have been asked to bring their own tumblers and cutlery to enjoy the food and drinks. Other than clothes, you can bring in just about anything to swap – any remaining items will be donated to charity. Get your early bird ticket today!
